Greetings San Marco Church Family and Friends: The novelist, poet, and activist Wendell Berry died this week. Many of my clergy colleagues have had great things to say about him because of his deep Christian faith and his love for God’s created world. So my blog this week consists of sharing Berry’s most famous poem, entitled “The Peace of Wild Things.” In our turbulent world, these verses speak to me and I hope they speak to you as well. When despair for the world grows in me
And I wake in the Night at the least sound
In fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
Rests in his beauty on the water,
And the goat heron feeds.
I come into the peace of Wild things
Who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief.
I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day blind stars
Waiting with their light.
For a time I rest in the Grace of the world and I am free. This poem has echoes of Jesus’ teachings about observing the lilies of the field and not worrying found in Matthew 6. I pray that it offers you comfort. This Sunday, September 6, Bryan will continue his social justice series with a message entitled “The Trajectory of Scripture: Systemic Oppression and Race.” The message will focus upon Luke 8: 43-48.
