Dear San Marco Church Family: Starting this Wednesday, February 25, Preston Oughton will be leading a Bible Study on the “anti-heros” of scripture. This term refers to the many flawed but redeemed characters of scripture through whom God has done great things. Preston’s vision for this is what he calls “Project 41”, a reference to how after 40 days (or 40 years in some cases), scripture reveals a 41st day that ushers in joy that is God’s gift. Class will gather at 6pm, with a brief fellowship time followed by some great learning. Those who attended Preston’s class last Fall can attest to his skills. At noon on the second Friday of every month, a group meets at Riverside Park United Methodist Church to hold space for mental health awareness from a Christian perspective. I have attended several of these gatherings, and the group is diverse, intelligent and thoughtful. A retired CSX executive facilitates the group, and he does an excellent job. Pastor Emily Knight has extended an invitation to San Marco Church for anyone who wants to attend the group. I encourage you to consider attending the next meeting. Throughout my years as a United Methodist pastor, I have learned a great deal from shared events with other United Methodist churches. A vital benefit of our connectional system is that we can share resources and the energy that comes from our shared mission. God is at work in our communities, and for that I am grateful. I look forward to preaching this Sunday on Matthew 4: 1-11, the temptations of Jesus in the wilderness. I will focus on the meaning of wilderness training for Jesus and for us. This is one of the most interesting, thought provoking passages of scripture. I appreciate and depend upon your prayers as I prepare for Sunday.
