Dear San Marco Church Family: This week our annual conference for Florida United Methodists takes place in Lakeland. Our very own Derrick Scott, III is our conference lay leader, and Cheryl Branyon is our San Marco Church lay delegate. If you are unfamiliar with the annual conference, it includes several days of worship, teaching and preaching, and a variety of reports on various ministry accomplishments across our state. All clergy are required to attend, and folks in leadership (like Derrick) have significant responsibilities in planning and hosting the event. Thank you for your prayers that the event might offer encouragement and momentum for all who attend. This Friday evening, June 6, San Marco Church is hosting an event in our Sanctuary starting at 6pm. The event sponsor is “Take ‘Em Down Jax”, a local group focused on eliminating racial and economic injustice. The event includes a documentary entitled “Redlining: Mapping Inequality.” The practice of redlining refers to the historical and present reality of the many ways that banking, financial and even governmental entities have discouraged investment and financing in minority neighborhoods. Please come out and learn more about this important justice issue. There will also be a potluck meal starting at 6pm, so make this your dinner plan for Friday! I am grateful to Bryan and Sheridan Amerling for planning and organizing this event. Justice ministry is an important calling for all followers of Jesus! This Sunday, June 8, is Pentecost Sunday. We will recognize the birthday of the Christian Church and how the Holy Spirit came alive to the believers at Pentecost. The Scripture reading is Acts 2: 1-21, and I encourage you to read this passage before Sunday and think about the grand adventure that the early disciples experienced, and by extension the adventure that we are all invited to experience!
