Dear San Marco Church Family: What a great turnout we had for the Strides for Pride 5K last Sunday! Officially there were 14 people from our church who signed up for either the 5K or 1 mile fun run! Thanks for your participation. As I mentioned in Sunday’s message, the Easter season includes the 50 days between Easter Sunday and Pentecost, which occurs on June 8 this year. The resurrection of Jesus is, of course, at the center of our faith. It is a good time to ask ourselves, on a daily basis, how our worldview is different because of Jesus’ resurrection. For me, I can embrace a hopeful spirit despite so much in the world that is disturbing. Recently, I heard someone say it this way, “No, all is not well in our world. In fact, our world is a mess. But my faith tells me that one day all will be well, and that promise gives me the momentum to endure every challenge that I face.” I have mentioned previously that I am reading Father Richard Rohr’s book entitled “The Tears of Things.” He says in that book, “Please remember that certainty, not doubt, is the opposite of faith. The insistence on certainty reveals a need for control, not for love or understanding.” I think this insight is powerful, and I have seen much conflict and heartache that has resulted from an insistence on certainty. I am convinced that God calls us to an ongoing relationship of trust rather than a need to “prove” our faith or to defend it logically. We all have doubts from time to time, and this is natural because the God of the Old and New Testaments is a God we cannot control or fully understand this side of heaven. We are called to follow and to trust Him, and to live with the mystery of how the Holy Spirit works in the world. I can accept this by viewing my life as an adventure rather than a linear journey.
